Modeling Conjugate Heat Transfer in an Anode Baking Furnace Using OpenFoam

The operation of large industrial furnaces will continue to rely on hydrocarbon fuels in the near foreseeable future. Mathematical modeling and numerical simulation is expected deliver key insights implement measures further reduce pollutant emissions. These include design optimization burners, dilution oxidizer with exhaust gasses, mixing natural gas hydrogen. In this paper, we target non-premixed turbulent combustion a single heating section ring pit anode baking furnace. previous work, performed simulations using commercial flow simulator combined an open-source package for three-dimensional mesh generation. This motivates switching fully software stack. develop Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes model infinitely fast mixed-is-burnt participating media radiative heat transfer OpenFoam. refractory brick lining taken into account by conjugate model. Numerical provide valuable insight release chemical species distribution staged process two burners. Results show that at operating conditions implemented, higher peak temperatures are formed burner closest air inlet. results larger thermal nitric-oxide concentration. inclusion absorption bricks more uniform temperature symmetry plane center section. nitric-oxides reduced factor four compared adiabatic walls.
